[188 x 115 x 34 mm]. xiv, [ii], 396, [4] pp. Original binding by Edmonds & Remnants (with their ticket inside the rear cover) of dark purple ribbed cloth, the covers with a blind blocked border and the front cover with a gilt centre block reproducing the illustration from the title, the spine lettered in gilt, brown endleaves with printed advertisements, plain edges. (Head of the joints and headcaps slightly rubbed).

A few trivial spots but a very good copy. First published in 1855, with a fifth edition appearing in 1891. Piesse (1820-1862) described himself as an "Analytical Chemist" and gave his address as 2 New Bond Street, London.
