A lengthy proclamation issued by L. M. Revelliere-Lepeaux and the French Directory following the Coup of 18 Fructidor (4th September 1797). The Directory sets out their justification for staging the coup which ousted the royalists from the legislature and the subsequent annulment of previous elections.
The Directory warrant their actions by reasoning that the French people entrusted "the safekeeping of their Consititution to the fidelity of the Legislative Body and Executive Power". It sets out that "a long-organised plot by royalists, skillfully woven and pursued with unwavering determination" was uncovered by the Directory and the culprits immediately apprehended.
It concludes: "Thanks to fate, the conspirators are no longer in the Directory, nor in the two Councils! The Councils and Directory is finally in agreement, and the Republic is saved. Long Live the Republic".
