Spooner's Protean Views No.2. A Snow Scene. SPOONER (William).

£250.00

Which on being held before a strong light changes to a perspective view of a tunnel.

Small 4to. [285 x 228 mm]. Hand-coloured semi-transparent lithographic illustration on the original card frame with a printed caption. When held to light the image depicting a snow scene contating a horse drawn carriage, riders and pedestrains in a snowy outdoor landscape, transforms to a night scene containing two long and well lit tunnels, which the carriage and pedestrains are emerging from. (In fine condition). [ebc8140].

London: 377, Strand, [c.1838].

William Spooner was a print publisher based in London who specialised in novelty lithographs, primarily for children, which he called 'Transformations' or 'Protean Views'. These prints consisted of a scene or symbolic figure pasted on a window mount with another print layered on the verso. When held to the light the primary image would fade and in turn reveal the secondary image.
