Susanna and the Elders. SAYER (Robert) & BENNETT (John).

The first known instance of cross-examination on record is to be found in the case in which the Prophet Daniel defended Susanna against the false accusation of the elders. Engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after a painting by Paolo Caliari (Veronese).

Stipple engraving. [385 x 385 mm]. A classical scene of a young woman sitting on a bench attempting to cover her body while the two elders stand in front of her, one fondling her breast. (Very good condition). [ebc8164].

London: published by R. Sayer and J. Bennett, no. 53 Fleet Street, 15th November, 1779.

Based on a painting by Veronese which is held in the Louvre, Paris, (INV. 137). A later impression engraved by Edward Smith? (1813) is held by The British Museum, (museum number: 1861.1012.2249).
