A WEDDING GIFT FROM FRED HILBIBBER, HAIRCUTTER IN WILMINGTON

from its Discovery by Hudson to the Colonization under William Penn. To which is added, an Account of the Ecclesiastical Affairs of the Swedish Settlers, and a History of Wilmington, from its First Settlement to the Present Time. Illustrated by Drawings.

Engraved frontispiece, five plates and a folding map.

First Edition. 8vo. [239 x 145 x 23 mm]. 312pp. Bound in the original dark brown cloth, the covers elaborately blocked in blind, smooth spine blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, plain endleaves and edges. (Headcaps worn, corners a little bumped). Wilmington: [printed by Merrihew & Thompson for] Wilson & Heald, 107 Market Street, 1846.

Some light foxing and minor soiling but a good copy. With a pencil and ink inscription on the front endleaf: "Sarah B. Clark 18 June 1900. Given by Fred.k Hilbibber, haircutter to Bancrofts!" Sarah Bancroft was born in Wilmington in 1877, married Roger Clark on 18th June 1900, and died in Street, Somerset in 1973. This volume passed to her son, Stephen Clark.
