Karlsbad: Gebrüder Franieck, 1846

A little browning but a very good copy in the now rather worn original binding. Only one other copy has been located, at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

With the black ink name stamp of Hastings Russell and his bookplate. Francis Charles Hastings Russell (1819-1891) was commissioned into the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1838, retiring in 1844. He served as Liberal M.P. for Bedfordshire from 1847 to 1872, when he succeeded his cousin as 9th Duke of Bedford and moved into Woburn Abbey. He took an active interest in agriculture and experimentation and was President of the Royal Agricultural Society, Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire and a Knight of the Garter. He died after shooting himself as a result of insanity, while suffering from pneumonia. This volume remained at Woburn Abbey and we bought it from the Marquess of Tavistock in 1993.

A feature of the book is the series of vibrantly hand-coloured engravings depicting marksmen in traditional dress in the years 1732, 1796, 1807, 1825 and 1836. It was published for the shooting club of Karlsbad (which is now known as Karlovy Vary and falls within the Czech Republic) and contains, amongst other things, a list of former Patrons and descriptions of events that had been put on over the years.
