First Edition. 12mo. [163 x 98 x 24 mm]. xxviii, 255, [1] pp. Contemporary binding of straight-grained blue goatskin, the covers with a border composed of a gilt triple fillet, gilt crested roll and a thin blind roll. The spine divided into five panels with gilt tooled bands, lettered in the second panel, the others filled with gilt palmette and foliate tools, the corners of the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, the turn-ins tooled with a gilt roll, red endleaves, gilt edges.

Occasional light spotting or browning but a fine copy.

Neat ink inscription at the head of the front fly-leaf "F. Popham D.D. G. Jackson 1826". Booklabel of F.L. Popham and bookplate of Littlecote House, near Hungerford in Wiltshire. The Pophams lived at Littlecote from 1589, completing the brick mansion in 1592, and James I, Charles II and William of Orange all stayed there. In 1805 the family name became Leybourne Popham, and much of the house was refurbished in 1810. Francis Leybourne Popham served as High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1853. The estate was sold to Sir Ernest Wills in 1929 and is now a hotel.
