Drawing on Ballard's own experiences at the Lunghua Civil Assembly Centre in Shanghai during the Second World War, Empire of the Sun was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize as well as the Guardian Fiction Prize. The novel was adapted into an award winning film by Tom Stoppard in 1987, directed by Steven Spielberg, it starred a thirteen-year-old Christian Bale in his breakout role, as well as John Malkovich.
