Fidessa; A Collection of Sonnets. Reprinted from the Edition of 1596.
Woodcut vignette on the title, type-facsimile of the 1596 title-page within woodcut border, Whittingham's device at end.
8vo. [202 x 125 x 11 mm]. ix, [i], 70, [2] pp. Bound c.1980 in green goatskin, smooth spine lettered in gilt, Cockerell marbled endleaves, top edges gilt, others uncut.
Chiswick: from the Press of C. Whittingham, 1815
"Of this Volume One Hundred Copies only are printed". Edited by Philip Bliss, this is only the second edition of Griffin's Fidessa, and Bliss knew of only two copies of the 1596 original (ESTC locates three, at the British Library, Oxford and Huntington). A fine copy, and an early work from the Chiswick Press.
Not the least interesting feature is that Griffin's third sonnet is almost identical with Shakespeare's "Venus and young Adonis sitting by her" from The Passionate Pilgrim (1599).
From the collection of John Porter, with his notes.
