[1]f, xvi, 183, [3] pp. Quarter bound in heavy grain dark green goat skin and matching dark green textured cloth, the spine blocked and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, edges uncut. (Spine rubbed, hinges a little worn but holding, corners and edges bumped). Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1882.
Internally very clean with brightly coloured illustrations, overall in very good condition. Limited to 1040 copies, signed by the publisher.
A total of ninety-seven individuals are depicted by Crombie, dubbed 'modern Athenians' as a result of Edinburgh's sobriquet as 'The Athens of the North'. The nickname was coined during the period of Scottish enlightenment when Edinburgh rose to prominence as a centre of intellectual, philosophical and scientific learning.
