[240 x 170 x 34 mm]. xiv, [ii], 318, [2] pp. Contemporary binding by Riviere (signed with an inked pallet on verso of front free endleaf) of hard-grain dark blue goatskin, the covers tooled in gilt with a triple fillet border and a triple fillet panel with a large floral tool at the outer corners and a small flower head at the inner corners. The spine divided into six panels with gilt tooled raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with centres, corners and other small tools, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt double fillet, the turn-ins with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Very slightly rubbed).

Sporadic heavy foxing and spotting. The binding is up to the standard expected of Riviere and is in very good condition. It is signed "Bound by Riviere", and must therefore predate 1881 when Riviere took his grandson, Percival Calkin, into partnership and changed the name to "Robert Riviere & Son". The bindery was located at 196 Piccadilly, London, from 1862 to 1881. In 1880 the firm completed the three year task of restoring and rebinding the original Domesday Book.
