This Gothic romance was first published in Germany in 1848 and is based on the life of Sidonia von Borcke (1548-1620) - a Pomeranian noblewoman who was put on trial and executed for witchcraft. Lady Wilde (the mother of Oscar Wilde) published this English version in 1894. Sidonia suffered a tragic end, but her legacy lived on as she became the subject of several works of fiction and she was of particular inspiration to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
