LARGE PAPER COPY OF DIDOT'S MINIATURE EDITION BOUND BY CHAMBOLLE-DURU

Engraved frontispiece and nine plates by Masquelier after Lefebvre.

Four parts in two volumes. 12mo. [135 x 85 x 55 mm]. xxxvi, 303 pp; 358pp. Bound c.1890 by Chambolle-Duru (signed in gilt on front turn-ins) in red goatskin, the covers with a gilt triple fillet border. The spines divided into six panels with raised bands and gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third and at the foot, the others with floral centres and scroll corners, the edges of the boards tooled with a double gilt fillet, the turn-ins with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt over marbled edges.

Teerink / Scouten, A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift 397. Cohen 965.

A beautifully printed edition of L'Abbé Desfontaines translation. One of 100 copies on "grand papier vélin". The plates are in the early state before the letters. A few minor spots but a very fine copy in a meticulous binding. René-Victor Chambolle (1834-1898) joined Hippolyte Duru in 1861 and took over the business on Duru's retirement in 1863. He was succeeded by his son René Chambolle, who won a Silver Medal in the 1900 Paris Exhibition and died in 1915.
