John Cowper Powys was born 8th October 1872, therefore from the date of the inscription it can be presumed that this was a baptism present from his godmother.
John Cowper Powys (1872-1963) was a novelist, poet, philosopher and lecturer. His major novels include Wolf Solent (1929), A Glastonbury Romance (1932), Weymouth Sands (1934) and Maiden Castle (1936).
Powys' godmother, Philippa Frances Emilia Shirley (1829-1902) was also his paternal step aunt, her mother remarrying the Reverend Littleton Charles Powys (1789-1872) in 1838. Philippa went on to marry Walter Waddington Shirley the ecclesiastical historian.
