Engraved frontispiece portrait in vol.1, frontispiece and two plates by Hayman in vol.2, several pages of woodcut coins in vol.3.

Four volumes. 8vo. [213 x 130 x 138 mm]. Contemporary bindings of polished calf, the covers with a fillet and dog-tooth roll border and a thistle-like plant in the corners. The spines divided into six panels with gilt tooled raised bands and gilt compartments, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label and numbered in the third on a green label, the others with a large three-headed flower tool and fronds, the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, marbled endleaves, yellow edges. (Closed crack at head of upper joint on vol.3, and small stain on rear cover, slightly rubbed).

Bound without the fly-title to Poems on Several Occasions. A fine set Addison's Works, including his poems and translations, his Remarks on Italy, Dialogues upon the Usefulness of Ancient Medals, his plays (notably Cato) and other lesser pieces.

With the large contemporary armorial bookplate of William Middleton of Crowfield Hall, Suffolk. William Middleton (1710-1785) was born in Carolina and in 1729 his father gave him the 1800 acre Crowfield Plantation at Goose Greek in Berkeley County, South Carolina. He built a "magnificent country home", which he sold along with the plantation in 1754, and retired with his second wife and four children to the 9000 acre Crowfield Hall estate in Suffolk.
