The Poetical Works. ROWE (Nicholas), OTWAY (Thomas) and GARTH (Sir Samuel).

£300.00

JAMES CLARK'S COPY

With the Life of the Author. Cooke's Edition. Embellished with Superb Engravings.

Each work with an engraved frontispiece portrait and engraved additional title, Rowe with two plates, Otway and Garth with one. Fine woodcut vignette tailpieces.

Three Works bound together. 12mo. [148 x 88 x 23 mm]. 138, iv pp; 70, [2] pp; 86, [2] pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf, the covers with a gilt Greek-key roll border. Smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt fillets and rolls, lettered in the second on a black label, the others with a central medallion, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, mottled edges. (A little rubbed, and slight loss of gilt to spine).
London: printed for C. Cooke, No.15, Paternoster-Row, and sold by all the Booksellers in Great-Britain and Ireland, [1797-1800].

The Rowe and Otway both have plates dated 1797 and the Garth 1800. A very good copy. With the booklabel of James Clark, which is too large to fit inside the front cover and encroaches on to the free endleaf. James Clark (1811-1906) co-founded the shoe manufacturers C & J Clark of Street with his brother Cyrus. This volume passed to his son William Stephens Clark (1839-1925) and on to his grandson, Roger Clark (1871-1961), and great-grandson, Stephen Clark (1913-2011).
