Jan 1 1934". John Burns (1858-1943) was elected MP for Battersea in 1892 and left Parliament in 1918, having served as President of the Local Government Board and President of the Board of Trade (positions previously held by Chamberlain). He was a noted historian of London, book collector and cricket enthusiast, aided by a legacy from Andrew Carnegie.
