First Edition. 4to. [282 x 205 x 45 mm]. 316pp, [2]ff. Bound in publisher's silver cloth, pink cloth label to the spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, with pink endleaves. In original unclipped pictorial dust-wrapper showing price 50s. NET. (Spine and corners a little bumped, board edges slightly yellowed, endleaves lightly foxed. Dust-wrapper a little foxed and browned, with short chips and tears to the edges).

The period covered is from 1832, when La Sylphide was first performed until shortly before 1850. This wonderfully illustrated volume contains lithographs 'of all the great ballerinas, Taglioni, Fanny Essler, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, Lucile Grahn, Carolina Rosati' (Dust-wrapper).
