[189 x 120 x 27 mm].[1]f, xvi, 402 pp. Later 19th century binding by Riviere and Son (signed with an ink pallet) of polished calf, the covers with a gilt triple fillet border, the spine divided into six panels with raised bands and gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third on red goatskin labels and dated at the foot, the others with centres and corners, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Joints a little worn).

A very good clean copy. JP notes "Thomas White's use of Fry's Baskerville type for the title, appears to be the first application of an old-face fount in a nineteenth century book". Bought from Brunton of Edinburgh in 1969.
