PARIS EDITION, IN A PATCHED BINDING

The Vicar of Wakefield: A Tale. Supposed to be Written by Himself. Second Edition. Revised by Mr D***.

12mo. [151 x 84 x 23 mm]. 288pp. Bound in contemporary calf, the covers with a gilt double fillet border. Smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt double fillets, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label, plain endleaves and edges. (Early patched repair at head of upper joint, a little rubbed with surface loss).
Paris: sold by Theophilus Barrois junior, Bookseller, Quai des Augustins, 1784

With the half-title. Small wormhole in outer margin of last few leaves. Ink inscription "Melanie" on rear fly-leaf. A very good copy. The label is lettered "Vicar of Wakef" and the patched repair is crude but not unattractive.

This is the third edition of The Vicar of Wakefield to be published in English in Paris. The earlier two were dated 1779 and 1780. ESTC locates ten copies, with only Cambridge in the UK.
