THE DEATH-BED EDITION

In Nine Volumes Complete. With his last Corrections, Additions, and Improvements; As they were delivered to the Editor a little before his Death: Together with the Commentary and Notes of Mr. Warburton.

24 engraved plates by Major, Ravenet and Scotin after Blakey, Muller and Mosley after Wale, Walker, and Grignion after Hayman. Titles printed in red and black

Nine volumes. 8vo. [222 x 140 x 250 mm]. [2]ff, xiii, [i], 276 pp; [1]f, ii, 272 pp; [2]ff, xxx, [iv], 308 pp; [1]f, ii, 341 pp; [2]ff, 323, [13]pp; [1]f, iv, 416 pp; [1]f, xxxi, [i], 367 pp; [1]f, x, 280 pp; [1]f, xv, [i], 372 pp. Bound in contemporary polished calf, the covers with a gilt fillet border. The spines divided into six panels by raised bands and gilt compartments, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label and numbered in the third on a black label, the others with a sea creature within a crowned wreath, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves, lightly sprinkled edges. (Short cracks at foot of lower joint on vols 1 and 8 and upper joint of vol.9, slight chipping to headcaps, a little rubbed).
London: printed for J. and P. Knapton, H. Lintot, J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, and C. Bathurst, 1752.

A little spotting at the front of vol.1, some minor soiling mostly in vols 2 and 3, and a few marks. It is a very handsome copy, with the contemporary ink signature of Walter Bowman. It was last sold by William Brown of George Street on 30th November 1946 for £3 10s.

The title pages to vols 1 and 2 are cancels. This is a reissue of the 1751 first edition of the "death-bed" edition of the Works. It was edited and annotated by William Warburton, to whom Pope had left the copyright to all his published works.
