First edition. [241 x 157 x 1510 mm]. Bound in dark red half calf with marbled paper over boards, the spines divided into six panels by raised bands, panels two and four with dark green goatskin labels lettered in gilt, panels three numbered in gilt, plain endleaves. (Some fading to some of the goatskin labels, a few volumes with more recent labels, bindings are in very good condition).

Internally clean, overall in very good condition. Library stamps as well as cancelled library stamps of the University of Edinburgh located at the foot of the title page of each volume.

A monumental work of historically significant trials, spanning from the ninth year of the reign of King Henry the Second (A.D. 1163), up until the reign of King George IV (A.D. 1820). The collection includes articles of accusation, impeachments, proceedings and warrants for execution. Whilst William Cobbett (1763-1835) compiled the collection of trials, the first twenty-one volumes in the series were edited by Thomas Bayly Howell (1768-1815) and the remaining volumes were edited by his son Thomas Jones Howell.
