[2]ff, [viii], 516 pp. Newly bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full green morocco, the boards tooled in gilt with a triple fillet border, the spine divided into six panels by tooled raised bands, panels two and four with maroon labels lettered in gilt. The edges of the boards tooled in gilt, the turn-ins with a triple fillet border, chiyogami endpapers, top edge gilt, the others uncut.

A fine copy of Hardy's final novel. Originally appearing in bowdlerized serial form in Harper's Magazine from December 1894 to November 1895, its first publication in book form was as part of Hardy's Wessex Novels, of which it was volume eight.
