Frequently asked questions

  • We are currently dealing with a large stock of books and are therefore only buying very selectively.

If you would like to sell your books please send an email to enquiries@georgebayntun.com, preferably with clear photographs of:

    • The title, author, publisher, and published date (all usually found on the title page)

    • The covers (with reference to the condition)

Alternatively, you can call us on 01225 466000 to discuss.

  • We do not offer free valuations for probate or insurance purposes. We recommend either contacting an auction house or a specialist antiquarian book appraiser to determine the insurance value of these works.

If you would like an informal estimated value for the purpose of selling, please email enquiries@georgebayntun.com, preferably with clear photographs of:

    • The title, author, publisher, and published date (all usually found on the title page)

    • The covers (with reference to the condition)

Alternatively, you can call us on 01225 466000 to discuss.

  • With a building like ours it’s hard not to want to show it off a little bit!

However, as much as we would like to, we are unable to offer frequent tours of the bindery as they disrupt our production.

We only take tours via pre-appointment, so please get in touch if you would like to know more.

  • We certainly can!

However, we are currently overwhelmed with restoration work and so we are having to be selective in what we can take on. Even then, it may take some time.

    Please do enquire.

  • It is difficult to estimate the cost of binding without first seeing the book so please use these prices as a general guide only.

The prices below refer to books up to 10” high. Larger books will cost more. VAT must also be added on books bound for customers living in the UK. There is no VAT on books which we have bound for stock.

We can also carry out any necessary mending or cleaning. Please allow an additional sum of at least £50 per volume should this be necessary.

o The simplest binding in full leather, without requiring resewing, edge gilding or extra gilt tooling, costs from £500.

o In half leather, from £450.

    o In cloth, from £300.

If a book requires restoration or addition work such as unpicking, resewing, rounding and backing, edge gilding, as well as the later stages of covering (such as gilt tooling and lettering) it is approximately £50 per addition.

The current wait-time for new-binding projects is between three and six months beginning when the design is finalised with the customer.

If you would like to get a book bound by us, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

For more information see: About Our New Bindings.

  • From fragile manuscripts to modern first editions, our cases provide an ideal way to protect books and papers.

All our cases are made by hand, using goatskin (morocco) or calf leather or the finest quality book cloth. They can be lined with marbled paper, suede, or felt.

    The styles available are:

o Slipcase: an open-fronted box that leaves the spine of the book visible.

o Dropover box: a closed box which affords greater protection against light, dust, etc. The spine can be flat or rounded with raised bands to resemble a book, with the title and author lettered in gilt.

The prices below refer to boxes and slipcases made for books up to 10” high. Boxes and slipcases for larger books cost more. VAT must also be charged on work carried out for customers living in the UK.

    o Cloth slipcase – from £180

    o Cloth drop-over box – from £300

    o Full leather drop-over box – from £500

If you would like to know more about getting a box made don’t hesitate to get in touch!

For more information see our page: Boxes and Slipcases.

  • All our packages are carefully packed and are suitably weatherproof.

Shipping costs are relative to the size and weight of the books as well as the area it is being sent to.

The costs below are estimated on the values of a standard package under 5kg. Every book and package is different, therefore alternative costs may apply.

    - Within the UK: £10-20

    - For US Customers: £60-80

    - For non-US Customers: £30-70

Some countries may require import tax, duties and related Customs fees for the imports. The cost is not covered in payments you make to us. Largely, second-hand and antiquarian books are not subject to import tax.
